Andy Reid comments on controversial Deandre Baker signing

With the Kansas City Chiefs expected to add Deandre Baker to the practice squad, Andy Reid has come out in support of the decision. 

Some downright surprising news came out of the AFC West this week, as it was reported the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are looking to add cornerback Deandre Baker to their practice squad.

Baker hasn’t played this season after the New York Giants released him in early September following his trouble with the law. As has been well documented, Baker was arrested in Florida on four counts of robbery with a firearm. Those charges has since been officially dropped.

With his name in the clear, Baker is looking for a second NFL chance, with the Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid ready to give it to him. On Wednesday, Reid was asked about bringing Baker to town despite his troubled past, and the veteran coach made it clear the team has done their homework on him.

“I remember that he was a good player in college,” Reid said via USA Today. “He did a nice job at Georgia. He and Mecole Hardman are good buddies, and really, Brett’s (Veach) been doing everything to this point and will continue to do it. So, full trust in him, whatever he wants to do with it, we go. He and his guys do a great job of evaluating. Other than that, I don’t know much about him other than he was a good player in college.”

A former first-round pick out of Georgia, Baker appeared in 16 games as a rookie last season, starting 15 of them. In 2019, he posted 61 total tackles.

While he’ll be starting out his time with the Chiefs’ practice squad, the door is most certainly open for him to make the active roster down the road this season. Kansas City has been battling injuries in the secondary throughout the year. Should he work his way up, he’ll have the full support of Reid and the rest of the front office.
