The Washington Football Team might not be making a name change for the foreseeable future.

Prior to the start of the 2020 NFL season, the Washington franchise moved on from its controversial team name and opted to go with the Washington Football Team. The name is being used as a placeholder until the organization can come up with a suitable replacement. Don’t expect an answer anytime soon, however.

In an interview with ESPN, team president Jason Wright said that the Washington Football Team is “definitely in the running” to be the permanent name.

Washington Football Team could be here to stay

“It’s definitely in the running,” Wright said. “I don’t think anything is off the table. … With this one, people are excited about the idea of a club has an identity rooted solely in the area it represents. Maybe it’s Football Team or it’s Football Club. We need to get underneath the why, so no matter what direction we go, we can pull on the heartstrings of folks.”

Besides not ruling out the placeholder nickname, Wright says that a decision might not come in the next year, considering they have to file trademarks. What makes things more difficult is that the trademark process is lengthy, especially since individuals filed applications for 30 potential names. In addition, Wright says that he will only announce a new name once they come up with the logo designs as well to prevent the creation of bootleg logos upon a moniker announcement.

Another interesting tidbit that Wright brings up is that the team will not be moving on from their trademark burgundy and gold colors. No matter the nickname, the traditional colors will remain.

There was plenty of backlash at the announcement of the Washington Football Team name, citing it was too generic. But many got accustomed to the moniker. However, for those of you wanting the organization to adopt a new name, then you have to continue to be patient. Or, you’ll have to learn to love the current name, because it might not be going away.
