Former Dolphins and Georgia legend Jake Scott passes away
RIP to a legend in both the collegiate and professional level
Perhaps the greatest team ever assembled in the NFL came in 1972 with the Miami Dolphins. Enshrined in eternity as the only undefeated team, players from that roster will always be remembered.
Unfortunately, the NFL world mourned the loss of a legend Thursday evening.
Jake Scott, the MVP of Super Bowl VII, passed away Thursday after hitting hit head last week in Atlanta. He was 75. The Dolphins released a statement Thursday evening following the announcement of his passing.
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of Jake Scott. Jake made an impact from the day he joined the Dolphins in 1970, going on to earn five Pro Bowl selections, a place on the Dolphins Honor Roll and was the MVP of Super Bowl VII, capping off the only perfect season in NFL history.
“He will always have a place in our hearts and memories.”
Scott was a star at both levels
A standout for the Georgia Bulldogs, Scott was selected in the seventh round of the 1970 NFL Draft. He immediately became a starter and soon see the start of five consecutive Pro Bowl selections.
During the team’s immaculate season, Scott was instrumental in helping the Dolphins defeat Washington. His two interceptions sealed a 14-7 victory, thus awarding him as the first defensive back to win Super Bowl MVP. His best season would come in 1974, in which he tallied eight interceptions while helping Miami head back to the Super Bowl for the fourth consecutive year.
For his career, Scott tallied 49 interceptions for 551 yards and 13 fumble recoveries. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
As the Dolphins continue to play quality football, here’s hoping they can return to the postseason for the first time since 2016 in honor of Scott’s legacy.
