Ohio State lands top player in 2022 class in QB Quinn Ewers
By John Buhler
Quinn Ewers has just committed to play for Ohio State football in college.
Ohio State football just landed the No. 2 overall player in the 2022 class in Quinn Ewers.
Ewers announced on his Twitter account Thursday that he has committed to play for Ryan Day’s Ohio State Buckeyes. The five-star quarterback from Southlake, Texas had originally committed to play for Tom Herman’s Texas Longhorns, but de-committed in late October. Ewers is the No. 2 overall player in the 247 Sports Composite in the 2022 recruiting class. What a get for Ohio State.
Quinn Ewers’ commitment to Ohio State is an indictment of the Texas program
From a championship-winning standpoint, why would a player like Ewers not want to play his college ball at a national powerhouse like Ohio State? Day is a phenomenal head coach and the Buckeyes routinely win the Big Ten Championship and contend for the College Football Playoff. Simply put, this is a Midwest team that recruits at an SEC level. So what does this mean for Texas?
Ewers going to Ohio State after de-committing from Texas less than a month ago is a microcosm of everything that is wrong in Austin. The best quarterback in the state of Texas must play his college ball at Texas. Otherwise, what are the Longhorns even doing? When FOX’s Joel Klatt called out Herman on The Herd with Colin Cowherd this week, this is exactly what he was referring to.
If Ewers were to commit to Texas’ two primary recruiting rivals in either the Oklahoma Sooners or the Texas A&M Aggies, that would be one thing. However, seeing him go to another part of the country because he essentially thinks he cannot win a national title at Texas speaks volumes. This is not the final nail in the coffin of Herman’s time in Austin, but it sure does not help his cause.
As for Ohio State, Day has his program humming. In only year two in charge in Columbus, his Buckeyes have lost a grand total of one time. They are the favorite to win the Big Ten again and make the College Football Playoff in back-to-back years. Justin Fields will go pro after this season and in two seasons, Ewers will be making his debut in scarlet and gray. This is a big commitment.
Texas must be kicking itself after seeing the Southlake native commit to a Big Ten powerhouse.
