Clippers hilariously overpay Marcus Morris after losing Montrezl Harrell

Head coach Tyronn Lue will have more than enough to guide the LA Clippers deep into the playoffs, but their championship pursuit just got even more difficult after Sixth Man of the Year Montrezl Harrell stunned the Clippers by choosing to sign with the hated Los Angeles Lakers in free agency. Desperate to hold on to their frontcourt studs, the Clippers went above and beyond to retain Marcus Morris.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski confirmed that Morris, a top priority for LA this offseason, will re-sign with the Clippers for four years and $64 million.

After bouncing around the league like his twin brother Markieff, who won a ring with the Lakers last year, Morris started the 2019-20 season on the lackluster New York Knicks before earning a trade to the contending Clippers. While his scoring dipped from 19.6 per game to 10.1 per contest, he gave this team some bulk inside and some more shooting from the perimeter.

Morris will return to a starting role as the team’s power forward, and he is certainly worthy of a starting role given his versatility. He also performed quite well in the playoffs despite LA’s premature exit, averaging 11.8 points per game on 47.5 percent from 3-point range. But this price point has to make Clippers fans shake their heads, as they are paying premium money for a guy who will likely be the fourth scoring option and will barely top double digits in points per game next season.

The Clippers will be in the championship picture, as any team led by Kawhi Leonard and Paul George will at least get a puncher’s chance. However, the Clippers have stumbled out of the gate this offseason, as losing Harrell to the Lakers and paying top dollar for a 31-year-old power forward doesn’t look like how the front office drew things up.
