Alabama took advantage of a short-handed Kentucky team in a total blowout.

Alabama beat Kentucky by 60 points as the Crimson Tide won with style points to show everyone they are the No. 1 team in college football.

The Wildcats were playing without some of their best players as Mark Stoops was without more than a dozen key starter and performers against Nick Saban. That’s not what you want to see happen with Alabama on the schedule. Not that you want to see it any other time either.

Alabama could have played their freshmen today and gotten a stiffer test than what the Wildcats were able to do. Kentucky could have played with 13 players on either side of the ball and the outcome wouldn’t have been different. Heck, they probably would have still lost by 50.

Alabama makes a statement to the playoff committee

Crimson Tide quarterback Mac Jones tossed two touchdowns, including one to DeVonta Smith who became the SEC’s all-time record holder with touchdowns. The score was so lopsided that true freshman quarterback Bryce Young got to play in garbage-time and showcase the skills that made him the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback recruit in the nation on his first career touchdown.

Najee Harris continued his march on the record books, rushing for a pair of touchdowns to pace the nation in that category.

Not that this was the kind of offense to make grand proclamations on, but credit the Alabama defense for playing as well as they did. Allowing three points in an SEC game, regardless of whether the team is a short-handed Kentucky or not, is an accomplishment. The much-maligned unit has played much better of late as they hit their peak with Auburn on the schedule next weekend.

This is a team firing on all cylinders and poised to add another trophy to the trophy case in Tuscaloosa.

With the first College Football Playoff rankings coming out on Tuesday, Alabama made an impression on the committee that they should be No. 1 ahead of Notre Dame.
