The decision to postpone Florida State vs Clemson shouldn’t be controversial.

Neither the Clemson Tigers nor Florida State Seminoles want to admit fault for their Saturday afternoon game being postponed. Frankly, it doesn’t matter.

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence tweeted the Tigers wanted to play, while Florida State coach Mike Norvell expressed the same sentiment. So, whose decision was it?

Per ESPN, a Clemson player tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday but had traveled with the team. The Tigers went through all the right protocols to play, but Florida State was still uncomfortable taking the field with them. Considering what’s at stake, it’s not a surprising decision.

Neither team wants to take responsibility

Putting the safety of student-athletes above all else should not be ridiculed. Whether it was Dabo Swinney or Mike Norvell making the argument to their respective athletic director, it’s meaningless. In a college football season that has seen hundreds of games canceled or postponed, adding one more to the docket won’t have a major impact. The Seminoles are stuck in mediocrity, and Clemson will still have plenty of opportunities to solidify their status as College Football Playoff contenders.

In a statement, Mike Norvell backed the decision to move the game:

“Our first priority is the health of our student-athletes, and I appreciate the protocols that have been put in place by FSU and the ACC to ensure everyone’s health while allowing us to play this season,” Florida State coach Mike Norvell said in a statement. “It’s unfortunate that we will not have the opportunity to compete today, but we hope to be able to play Clemson in December. I am thankful for the support and coordination between our administration, Clemson and the ACC office. Our team will now turn our focus to hosting Virginia next week.”

Fair is fair. Even if it’s only a slim chance that another player or staff member contracts COVID-19, that’s enough to move the game. Such is the norm in this weird 2020 college football season.
