When Georgia football wears black jerseys, people take notice.

Georgia football is going with black jerseys vs. Mississippi State football on Saturday night.

The Georgia Bulldogs typically wear red jerseys with gray pants when they tee it up Between the Hedges. However, we have seen a few variations to the Dawgs’ kits over the years. The most notable jersey are the incredibly controversial black jerseys. Georgia first started wearing them under former head coach Mark Richt, and everybody will always bring up the Alabama game.

Kirby Smart plans to erase the stigma associated with the black jerseys

Though the Dawgs have worn black jerseys a handful of times since the late 2000s, the game everybody refers to is the infamous Alabama Blackout game. Georgia was undefeated in the early part of the 2008 college season. Nick Saban’s upstart Alabama Crimson Tide program came into Sanford Stadium and set the tone for what the next decade of SEC football would be about.

What is interesting about that game was who was on Saban’s coaching staff in Alabama at the time. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart cut his teeth as Saban’s most notable protege. Alabama slaughtered the Dawgs heading into halftime of that infamous game. Georgia rebounded in the second half, but this embarrassing was the beginning of the end of the Richt era in Athens.

Smart is doing his best to get rid of the stigma associated with these jerseys. While it would be a great idea for the Dawgs to rock these threads at least one home game a season, you do have to talk certain members of Dawg Nation off the ledge when bringing up these uniforms. Though they do look fantastic, they are an ever-present remember of one awful moment in Richt’s career.

While wearing a certain jersey should not evoke this kind of a visceral reaction out of a fan base, this is Dawg Nation we are talking about. This is a college football fan base that has won a ton of games over the years, but never the big one since 1980. Georgia’s national title drought will be a major talking point in college football until the Dawgs finally win one under Smart at some point.

With Georgia’s season essentially coming to an end two weeks ago down in Jacksonville, what better way for the team to get its fan base excited than to wear these often-talked about black uniforms? Doing so against a team Georgia should beat in the Mississippi State Bulldogs may go a long way towards flipping the script on these controversial jerseys. Will the narrative ever change?

Georgia going with black jerseys is always a bold decision and one we will always talk about.
