Heisman watch: Kyle Trask takes lead, Justin Fields struggles, Spencer Rattler is back
Heisman watch candidate No. 4: Zach Wilson, QB, BYU
Coming into BYU’s matchup against a North Alabama team that entered Week 12 at 0-3 on the season, it figured that quarterback Zach Wilson was going to dominate when on the field but that he wouldn’t be asked to lead the charge for very long as the Couguars could dominate early and then shift into cruise control. And that indeed turned out to be the case as BYU secured a resounding 66-14 victory.
In his limited work, however, Wilson continued his impressive run at the helm of the undefeated Cougars offense. On the day, he completed 10-of-16 passes for 212 yards with four touchdowns and no turnovers while also rushing once for 33 yards. Now with 34 total touchdowns and close to 3,000 total yards on the season in just nine games, Wilson would be a major snub if he wasn’t named a Heisman finalist.
Heisman watch candidate No. 3: Mac Jones, QB, Alabama
Following a lengthy hiatus as Alabama had a bye week and then saw the matchup against LSU last week get postponed, Mac Jones and Crimson Tide were back in Tuscaloosa on Saturday and they put a whooping on Kentucky, winning the game 63-3. But given how decisive the victory was in relation to how the Tide have played all season, you would’ve expected Jones to have a better day in the box score.
Not only did Jones throw his third interception of the year but the Alabama signal-caller threw for just 230 yards with two touchdowns, taking him off his previously impressive pace. I’ve maintained that Jones would have to lose his grip on the top spot in these rankings to get displaced and, while Bama was dominant as a whole, this showing was enough to do just that for Jones.
