Heisman watch: Kyle Trask takes lead, Justin Fields struggles, Spencer Rattler is back
Heisman watch candidate No. 2: Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
In the most high-profile game of Week 12 with two top-10 teams in the Big Ten facing off, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields had the opportunity to take the lead in the Heisman watch rankings. He had been near-perfect through the Buckeyes’ first three games of the season and continuing that over an increasingly bigger sample size would’ve solidified it.
Unfortunately for Fields, he played his shakiest game of the year to date. After not having thrown an interception in the three previous games, Fields threw three against Indiana. He still ended the day with 300 passing yards and two scores along with 78 rushing yards and another score, giving him 16 total touchdowns and over 1,300 total yards in only four games. But with the turnovers and given the small size of OSU’s schedule, it’s not enough for him to take the No. 1 spot.
Heisman watch candidate No. 1: Kyle Trask, QB, Florida
Though Florida shockingly trailed 10-7 to Vanderbilt midway through the second quarter on Saturday, it was more a sleepy start for the Gators than a sign of any real problem. After that, however, Kyle Trask and the offense finally kicked it into gear and ended up outscoring the Commodores 31-7 from that point on. And Trask made his claim as the Heisman favorite clearer than ever.
Trask completed 26-of-35 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns, continuing a record-setting season. His 31 touchdowns are the most for an SEC quarterback ever through seven games and he’s done so while throwing for over 2,500 yards and with only three interceptions. With Fields’ turnover-fest and Jones’ pedestrian effort, the award is now Trask’s to lose.
