Illinois football’s fake punt on Nebraska football oddly worked to perfection.
Illinois pulled off the smoothest fake punt you’ll ever see.
The Illinois Fighting Illini were up 28-10 on the Nebraska Cornhuskers heading into their first offensive series of the second half. When it looked like Illinois was sure to punt on a fourth-and-8 from its own 31-yard line, punter Blake Hayes had other ideas. He scampered for a highly unlikely fourth-down conversion on his ridiculous fake punt. He could not believe it was even happening.

There was no way Blake Hayes should have converted on fourth-and-8
There were at least three times on this remarkable run by Hayes where it should have failed. He held on to the ball too long before deciding to run with it. Hayes would try to run to his right initially before doing his best to avoid being tackled before changing directions. Before he got enough yardage to convert on the first down, Hayes started to run laterally to the sidelines.
Every time you watch this fake punt, you are continually blown away by how easily it was converted.
