Another day, another college football game postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak, as Oklahoma-West Virginia is off for this weekend.

Wednesday provided college football fans with a sense of reality, as the nation deals with alarming increases in new COVID-19 cases on a daily basis. Earlier on in the day, Alabama head coach Nick Saban tested positive for the coronavirus for the second time this season, which officially knocked him out of this Saturday’s Iron Bowl game against Auburn. That was not the only news to hit the NCAA world on this day.

College football insider Bruce Feldman reported that this Saturday’s Big-12 matchup between the Oklahoma Sooners and West Virginia Mountaineers has been postponed to Dec. 12. The decision comes after Oklahoma paused team activities due to positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing.

First postponed game of the season for both teams

The postponement does hold significance, as it will now be played two weeks from now. But more importantly, it will take place a week prior to the Big 12 Championship Game.

With this game now behind them as they focus on limiting the spread inside their football program, Oklahoma will pivot to preparing for their game with the Baylor Bears on Dec. 5. If the Sooners defeat the Bears and the Mountaineers in consecutive weeks, they will clinch a berth in the Big 12 title game. As for West Virginia, they will now prepare to rank the No. 15-ranked Iowa State Cyclones next week.

In addition to this game getting pushed to a later date, Oklahoma’s men’s basketball team also postponed their first two games of the season against Texas-San Antonio and Central Florida due to positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing.
