For the first time in 15 years, Mike Tyson will step into a boxing ring as he takes on Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition bout that headlines a pay-per-view card at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA.
The main event contest will be held under special, specified rules that include eight rounds of two minutes each. Both combatants will wear 12-ounce gloves, as opposed to the standard 10, and neither man will be wearing protective headgear. A cut will bring an end to the fight.
Should the bout go the distance, judges from the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) will not score the bout. It will instead go to three other boxing greats, watching the fight remotely — Christy Martin, Vinny Pazienza, and Chad Dawson — to name a winner.
This is the first fight (albeit not officially) for Tyson, the former undisputed heavyweight champion, since a loss to Kevin McBride in June 2005. Jones Jr., the former light heavyweight champion, last fought in February 2018 in a decision win over Scott Sigmon. That marked Jones Jr.’s fourth win in a row.
The co-headliner will be YouTuber Jake Paul competing in his second pro fight and looking for his second pro win, as he takes on former NBA star Nate Robinson, making his pro debut, in a six-round bout. Former super middleweight and light heavyweight champion Badou Jack will also be featured on the card.
Mauro Ranallo, “Sugar” Ray Leonard and UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya will be on the call for tonight’s action. Ranallo fills in for Al Bernstein.
The event will also feature musical performances from French Montana, Wiz Khalifa, YG, Saint Jhn, and Ne-Yo. Lil Wayne was scheduled to take part but will no longer be performing.
