Santa Clara County prohibiting sports until Dec. 21: 49ers, Stanford, San Jose State in limbo
Santa Clara County will not allow professional, collegiate or youth sports through Dec. 21 as it cracks down on the spread of COVID-19.
Santa Clara County is not taking any chances when it comes to the spread of COVID-19. Their caution is going to have a huge impact on sports in the area.
The San Francisco 49ers, Stanford Cardinal and San Jose State Spartans are among the football teams who won’t be allowed to play under a new order from the County, barring contact sports until Dec. 21.
Santa Clara’s restrictions will stop the NFL and college football in the county
The 49ers are traveling south to face the Rams on Sunday, but future games are certain to be impacted.
They are slated to host the Bills on Dec. 7 and the Washington Football Team on Dec. 13. Unless a waiver is granted, those games will have to move venue or be canceled.
Stanford took down rival Cal on Friday, but they too will have a game in the cancelation window. Next week’s showdown with Washington will be played in Seattle. On Dec. 12 they are expected to welcome Oregon State to Stanford Stadium.
San Jose State is 4-0 and sitting second in the Mountain West. Unfortunately, the rest of their season is now in serious jeopardy. They already had to cancel two games against Fresno State and Boise State. They were supposed to close the regular season at home against Hawaii on Dec. 5 and on Dec. 12 against Nevada.
As Kyle Bonagura pointed out in another tweet, Stanford and SJSU weren’t allowed to practice in Santa Clara initially and moved their activities to neighboring San Mateo County and Humboldt State respectively.
