Ed Orgeron is trying to find positivity in LSU football’s disappointing season.
LSU has had one of the worst title defense seasons in recent memory, as Ed Orgeron and the Tigers are under .500 with Alabama yet to come on the schedule. While most coaches would be completely despondent after falling off a cliff at such a breakneck speed, Orgeron is remaining unusually calm and collected, as he is trying to find the positives in a year where the Tigers have taken it on the chin so frequently.
Relayed by ESPN’s David Hale, Orgeron claims that the 3-4 season has helped the Tigers “build character and grit” as he attempts to put a positive spin on this disappointing year in Baton Rouge.
Ed O: “Nobody wants to go through a season like this but I do believe we’re building character and grit and I think that will pay off in the end."

Coach O is finding the silver lining in LSU football’s trying season
While many expected Orgeron’s Tigers to regress without stars like Joe Burrow, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Justin Jefferson, and Patrick Queen, going into December with a sub-.500 record has to be a bit of a surprise. While Myles Brennan looked solid in Burrow’s stead, throwing 11 touchdowns in three games, he was lost for the year with a back injury and true freshman quarterback TJ Finley hasn’t been as precise a thrower. As a result, Scott Linehan’s offense has looked disjointed against SEC competition.
Not only will LSU have to lock horns with Nick Saban and the Tide, but they will end the season with a matchup against Heisman front-runner Kyle Trask and Florida. Going 3-6 one year after an undefeated, record-setting season would certainly be quite the system shock for an LSU program that was on the rise after last season.
Perhaps Orgeron and the Tigers will regroup in a season not affected by a pandemic. However, this season has been bitterly disappointing, and no amount of Orgeron positivity can erase that.
