Matt Nagy gives half-hearted endorsement for Mitchell Trubisky starting
Is Mitchell Trubiskiy going to be given another shot to play?
Matt Nagy either has given up on the season or given up on himself. After five straight losses, the Chicago Bears now are sitting 5-6, barely clinging onto life in the NFC playoff picture.
The defense is fine in the Windy City. The offense is not. More than anything, the quarterback concerns that no one wants to address will likely keep Chicago out of the postseason for another year.
Chicago could have a chance to return to .500 when facing Detroit on Sunday. Mitchell Trubisky could be the starter depending on the status of Nick Foles’ hip.
When asked if Trusbisky would start against the Lions, Nagy gave the most nonchalant answer anyone could give when fighting to keep their season success from sinking deeper into pretender status.
Is Trubisky the right guy?
The former No.2 pick returned to action for the first time since his one play in Week 8 against the New Orleans Saints. The only positive of the night was his pregame speech that would make Bears fans want to run through a wall.
Trubisky finished 26-of-46 for 242 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions and a fumble returned for a score in the primetime 41-25 loss to the Packers.
At this point, Nagy’s seat is beyond hot. Thanks to names like Adam Gase and Anthony Lynn struggling even worse, he could be kept around for another season.
No matter his status with the team post-2020, Nagy told his players to “wake up” after the defense allowed 393 yards of total offense to Aaron Rodgers.
“Yesterday was flat-out embarrassing, and our guys know it. I’m not telling you something they don’t know,” Nagy told reporters Monday. “They know it. But we’re going to step up and all coaches, all players, and we’ve got five games left.”
If Trubisky is the incumbent starter, it might not the best the worst thing for Chicago. In arguably his best game of the season, the fourth-year quarterback threw for 242 yards, three touchdowns and zero turnovers in a. Week 1 victory over Detroit.
Throw in the fact the Lions recently fired Matt Patricia, this should play in the Bears’ favor. That’s not to say Trubisky is going to be the guy moving forward, but a win’s a win, right?
