5 replacements for Doug Pederson as Eagles head coach
By Mike Luciano
Doug Pederson could very well end up fired if he keeps coaching like this.
In one of the most sudden, shocking collapses in recent memory, the Philadelphia Eagles went from a perennial playoff team to incapable of winning in the worst division in football, all the while watching quarterback Carson Wentz regress from a Pro Bowl-caliber player into someone who might get benched despite having five years left on his contract. Most of the blame for that falls on bewildered head coach Doug Pederson, who could be in line for a pink slip.
The Eagles could look to can Pederson, who will always hold a memorable place in Philly sports history given his Super Bowl victory, and replace him with one of these five candidates.
Look for one of these five qualified candidates to replace Doug Pederson as head coach
Plenty of staff from the 2017 champions are still hanging around, and Staley, who is serving as both the running backs coach and assistant head coach, numbers among them. Staley, who has received several endorsements from his players despite not calling plays for the offense, helped a motley crew of backs form a lethal trio that served them well in the 2017-18 postseason. In recent years, his acumen has helped Miles Sanders become one of the game’s most explosive running backs.
If Staley is able to rally the troops and shift the offense to a run-heavy style that features Sanders as the focal point of their attack, that could help Wentz, as he wouldn’t have to play hero ball and force throws as he does frequently under Pederson.
Staley will assuredly get interested from other NFL teams during this head coaching hiring cycle, and losing him could mean that the Eagles would be without an ideal Pederson replacement. The Eagles have the potential to be a gold mine if they hire Staley and prevent a rival team from poaching him.
