Devin Hester calls out Jay Cutler for being a bad leader with Bears
By John Buhler
Devin Hester was not a fan of Jay Cutler’s leadership style with the Chicago Bears.
Devin Hester is the latest former Chicago Bears player to have a Jay Cutler story.
The former All-Pro kick returner did incredible stuff for the Monsters of the Midway. While Hester might end up in Canton one day and Cutler will not, the former Bears quarterback remains one of the very best to play in the Windy City to date. On Untold Stories with Master Tesfatsion, Hester held nothing back when it came to critiquing Cutler’s lack thereof leadership style at quarterback.
Devin Hester is not the first player to criticize Jay Cutler and will not be the last
The genesis of Hester’s destruction of Cutler’s leadership abilities was in him explaining why he never was involved more in the passing game while with the Bears. In college with the Miami Hurricanes, Hester was “Mr. Everything” for “The U”. While he would be used as receiver a bit later in his career, Hester never saw the ball thrown his way when Cutler arrived in Chicago.
Hester said the only receiver Cutler was close with was Brandon Marshall. This was mostly because they were draft classmates with the Denver Broncos, as well as Marshall being able to call out Cutler on his B.S. All the while, not a single ball was thrown Hester’s way in practice. He eventually became exclusively a special teams superstar by that point in his illustrious career.
Cutler had all the arm talent to be a star, but not necessarily the personality to be the man.
