Rob Manfred might ruin baseball uniforms in the near future.

Rob Manfred isn’t the most popular guy in the baseball world right now, as his decision to almost cancel the 2020 MLB season as a result of a dispute with the union wasn’t the best hill to die on. Shifting away from ruining the aura around the game and the rules affecting the pace of play on it, Manfred’s new slant is figuring out how to shove more corporate advertising into the equation in a very shameless move.

Manfred is looking into putting advertisements on MLB uniforms. Manfred has inquired not only about pricing, but also slapping ads on the shirt sleeves and the side of the batting helmets.

Rob Manfred might follow the NBA’s lead and put ads on jerseys

While fans eventually got accustomed to it over the season, a Nike swoosh ending up in the top right part of jerseys that were normally plain for years rubbed a certain demographic of fans the wrong way. Putting a giant ad for Subway on the other side will only confirm that Manfred is looking to cram more corporate sponsorship in America’s pastime.

As if being inundated with ads for games, the strike zone on the telecast, and individual home runs, do the owners think cramming even more corporate product placement into the games is really going to be the secret ingredient that satisfies the consumer?

If Manfred does this, there will be no going back, and ads on the jersey are going to be permanent. If Manfred finds that he can get away with putting one smaller ad on the sleeve, he might look to stick additional ads on wherever he can. The World Series might end up looking more like the English Premier League with all of the advertising plastered on the players.
