Penn State football just did something only seven other college programs have done.
It may have only been Penn State football’s second win of the season, but it was a historic one.
By defeating the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 23-7 on the road in Piscataway, New Jersey, the Penn State Nittany Lions now have 900 career wins as a program. They are now one of eight teams to win that many at the FBS level and are the fourth Big Ten team to ever accomplish this, joining the Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes and Nebraska Cornhuskers, although most of them were before they joined the Big Ten.
So the list of college football teams with 900 wins all time now is:
— Mike Hall (@MikeHallHere) December 5, 2020
MICHIGAN 965
OHIO STATE 928
Alabama 924
Texas 920
Notre Dame 917
Oklahoma 914
NEBRASKA 904
PENN STATE 900
8 teams. 4 in the Big Ten.
It is a testament to how dominant Penn State has been historically
The four other teams with 900 or more wins all time are the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Texas Longhorns, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Oklahoma Sooners. If Penn State can get back to good next year and Nebraska continues to struggle, there is a chance the Nittany Lions can surpass them as the seventh-winningest program. Nebraska should have stayed in the Big 12.
While this has been a year from hell for Penn State, and frankly for all of us, getting to win No. 900 means Penn State does not have to worry about it next year. Though it was on the road against a rebuilding Rutgers team in the midst of a global pandemic, this victory will still count for the Nittany Lions. This is why Penn State is viewed as an undeniable college football blue-blood.
Congratulations on getting to win No. 900 as a football program, Penn Staters!
