Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond proving his doubters wrong with superb season
By John Buhler
Kellen Mond made statement after statement in his senior season with Texas A&M football.
Texas A&M is thriving due in large part to the great play of quarterback Kellen Mond.
Though Mond was viewed as a top-three passer in the SEC universally at the start of the season, it has been fantastic to watch him finally put it all together under head coach Jimbo Fisher. While he will not be a Heisman Trophy finalist with his SEC counterparts in Mac Jones of the Alabama Crimson Tide or Kyle Trask of the Florida Gators, Mond did silence all of his critics and doubters.
Kellen Mond may help the Aggies crash the College Football Playoff party.
Mond completed 18-of-23 passes for 196 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions vs. a feisty Auburn Tigers team on the road. He also had 10 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown in Texas A&M’s 31-20 road victory down on The Plains. No. 5 Texas A&M improved to 7-1 on the season, winning six games in a row for the first time since the 2016 campaign. They are rolling.
The senior from San Antonio, Texas had 1,573 passing yards for 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions entering play on Saturday. While his sub-60 completion percentage will not help him get drafted high in 2021, Mond more than did enough in his senior season in College Station to prove all his doubters wrong. His consistency has helped make Texas A&M a real playoff threat.
For Texas A&M to get in, the Aggies need Alabama to beat Florida in the SEC Championship game and either the Ohio State Buckeyes to not come out of the Big Ten or for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to beat the Clemson Tigers for a second time. Again, Texas A&M getting in feels unlikely, but they are most certainly New Year’s Six bound as a top-five team in the country. This team is solid.
Mond is proof that one can change their narrative if they take advantage of every opportunity.
