Derek Kerstetter suffered a brutal injury during the Texas win over Kansas State but received some encouraging news on the injury all things considered.
Texas football scored 69 points in their win over Kansas State but the enthusiasm and joy you’d typically have after a win of that magnitude were subdued after the injury to Derek Kerstetter.
The senior offensive lineman was carted off in the second quarter after his leg bent in a way no human should ever have their leg bent. He gave a “horns up” salute as he was carted off the field but he was immediately taken to an area hospital for further evaluation.
Derek Kerstetter suffered a dislocated ankle and broken fibula
At the hospital, Kerstetter was diagnosed with a dislocated ankle and fractured fibula. He avoided any torn ligaments and was able to fly home on the Texas football team charter.
This isn’t entirely good news, but it’s a bit of a relief that it wasn’t more severe and that Kerstetter was able to fly home with his teammates. He still faces a long road to recovery but it’s a bit of a silver lining he was able to fly home with his brothers after what looked like a devastating lower-leg injury that could have kept him hospitalized for much longer.
More clarification from Texas. Senior OL Derek Kerstetter has a dislocated ankle and fibula fracture. But he will fly home on the team charter. Great news, all things considered.

Thankfully, Kerstetter was able to receive quick and great treatment and attention to his injury. Now, the hope is he will be able to rehab and make a complete and full recovery and potentially continue his football career at the professional level.
