No, Trevor Lawrence is not going to win a Heisman Trophy but it doesn’t matter for the Clemson football star quarterback.

It has set in that Trevor Lawrence has no shot of winning a Heisman Trophy anymore.

Sure, Lawrence may be a finalist for the 2020 Heisman Trophy, but it will only be as a career achievement sort of honor. He was the co-favorite to win it at the start of the year, but COVID happened, taking him and Ohio State’s Justin Fields pretty much out of the conversation. Either Alabama’s Mac Jones or Florida’s Kyle Trask will be the next man to join the sacred fraternity.

Trevor Lawrence is all about team goals anyway

With Lawrence missing a pair of starts vs. the Boston College Eagles and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish due to him testing positive for COVID-19, this put his Heisman Trophy candidacy on life support. Having a rivalry game postponed vs. the Florida State Seminoles pretty much put the nail in the coffin. A lackluster game vs. the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday left no doubt whatsoever.

It has become a trend of late, as the presumptive preseason favorite to win the Heisman never does. In fact, the only guys to win the award in recent memory that did not come as much of a surprise in that particular campaign were Marcus Mariota with the 2014 Oregon Ducks and Baker Mayfield with the 2017 Oklahoma Sooners. The preseason Heisman Trophy curse strikes again.

Ultimately, Lawrence only really cares about winning. It is all about the team. In his three years at Clemson, he has won all but one of his starts and his team has only dropped two games up to this point. He won a national title as a true freshman two years ago and played for another last season. Clemson is one game away from making the playoff for the sixth year in a row.

As everybody knows Lawrence will enter the 2021 NFL Draft to play for some AFC cannon fodder known as the New York Jets or the Jacksonville Jaguars, it stinks that he will not be the first Clemson player to win the Heisman Trophy. It should have happened already with Deshaun Watson a few years ago, but here we are. Sometimes, you just cannot have it all, can you?

Lawrence can win a second national title, but he will never win a Heisman Trophy at Clemson.
