Alex Smith suffers bloody leg injury after getting spiked by teammate

Towards the end of the second quarter, viewers were shocked to see Alex Smith’s left leg bloodied.
It’s well known that Alex Smith underwent a grueling recovery period for him to take the field in for the Washington Football Team in 2020. Back in 2018, Smith broke his right leg and had to undergo a total of 17 surgeries to get back to normal. Football fans are well aware of Smith’s journey and have been actively rooting for him to suceed.
Those very fans received a brief scare during Washington’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Near the tail end of the second quarter, FOX cameras showed Smith’s left leg bloodied. As it turns out, the injury was caused by Smith getting inadvertently cleated by center Chase Roullier.
Smith is fine, as he returned to play on the next possession after getting his leg taped up by Washington’s training staff.
Smith returned for the next possession
All eyes have been on Smith since he made two spot appearances earlier this season. However, head coach Ron Rivera announced him as their new starting quarterback after Dwayne Haskins was demoted and Kyle Allen suffered a season-ending dislocated ankle during their Week 9 game against the New York Giants.
With Smith starting under center, Washington has gone 2-1 with victories against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving. In those three games, Smith completed 69.8-percent of his passes for 705 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. As a result of those wins, Washington has leapfrogged the Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East standings. In fact, entering Monday’s game, Washington was half a game behind the Giants for first place.
At halftime, Smith completed 15-of-22 pass attempts for 122 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Luckily, the veteran quarterback wasn’t seriously injured. But it just goes to show that Smith is one of the toughest players in the league to continue to play with a bloodied leg. Regardless of the end result, Smith is the odds-on favorite to win the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award.
