The Chicago White Sox have added a very big name to their starting rotation.

The White Sox needed to make a rotation upgrade this offseason if they truly hoped to accelerate their competitive window, and they’ve done just that in a trade for Texas Rangers ace Lance Lynn. The veteran Lynn was made available at the trade deadline of this shortened season, but Texas had trouble finding adequate compensation for the former All-Star. On the season, Lynn finished with a 6-3 record, good for a 3.32 ERA to boot.

Lynn will slide into he two or three-spot in the White Sox rotation, behind the likes of Lucas Giolito and perhaps Dallas Keuchel. His veteran presence will come in handy for a young team still reaching their full potential as a ball-club.

What will the Rangers get in return for Lynn?

Texas had high expectations in a possible return for Lynn, and will be receiving right-handed pitcher Dane Dunning as well as a prospect from the South Side of Chicago.

Dunning is only 25 years old, and should get an opportunity right away in the middle of the Rangers rotation. Texas is still a few years away from contention, but not enough to commit to a full rebuild in Arlington, hence receiving an MLB-ready pitcher who can contribute right away.

Tony La Russa and Co. were also in play for Sonny Gray, but didn’t want to give up the farm in the process.

The White Sox are more than just a team on the rise — they’re an American League power in the making.
