Jimmy Johnson has surprising take on Cowboys and Dak Prescott
Dak Prescott could be the franchise quarterback. Could it just not be with the Dallas Cowboys?
Jimmy Johnson knows a thing or two about the Dallas Cowboys. Helping the franchise in the 1990s win a pair of Super Bowls, he’s a legend in the Lone Star State.
He also knows coaching after posting an impressive 80-64 record in the NFL and an even better 81-34-3 record in college. So when Johnson believes that Mike McCarthy could be the guy for the Cowboys’ future, fans should take solstice in it.
Now the question is, what about Dak Prescott?
Johnson is certain that in the right circumstances, Prescott would be the future of the organization. The slight problem is, the Cowboys are sitting at 3-8 and are picking inside the top five of the 2021 NFL Draft.
For that reason, Johnson believes the Cowboys should draft a “franchise quarterback” if in the right spot.
“I don’t expect them to have this high of a pick in the draft in the future, so I would not bypass a franchise quarterback in the draft” Johnson said Tuesday evening. “Quarterbacks are valuable. Go ahead and take one if one’s there if you’re picking.”
Could this be the end of Prescott’s time in Texas?
Prescott suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle during a Week 5 outing against the New York Giants. After what was hopeful to be a breakout year under the franchise tag, Jerry Jones still is uncommitted on the 27-year-old long-term under center.
Earlier this year, Jones stated the team would likely franchise tag Prescott a second time if a deal could not be reached. Johnson disagrees with that plan, saying it wouldst the team back for the long haul due to the pricing.
The Cowboys would owe Prescott roughly $38 million if he were tagged a second time. Still, with multiple injures to the offensive line, defense and lack of depth, it felt like a down year at “The Star” anyways.
Prescott has proven to be a leader and the right guy to lead a team. Currently, his record sits at 42–27 with 17,634 passing yards and 106 touchdowns against 40 interceptions. If the Cowboys do draft a quarterback, they could find a trade partner to take either the rookie or agree to terms to bring Prescott in as their leading man.
This could be something to watch down the line for sure.
