Justin Fields on Michigan: ‘We expect to beat them every year’
Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is extremely confident heading into the rivalry game vs. Michigan.
There is still no certainty as of Tuesday afternoon as to whether Ohio State and Michigan will play this weekend. If the game is indeed played, the Buckeyes will enter as the biggest favorites (28.5 points) in The Game history and a lot of that is thanks to the amazing quarterback play of Justin Fields.
Fields would be a Heisman contender in a normal season and has provided great leadership as a 21-year-old who knows he is a top NFL prospect in 2021. And his and his teammates’ and coaches’ expectations for The Game are the same as they always are. They expect to beat Michigan every year.
Justin Fields sets the expectation for Ohio State vs. Michigan
Michigan has won twice since 2001 and one of those came the year interim coach Luke Fickell led the Buckeyes. Ohio State has won eight in a row and the past three victories have all come by double-digit margins. Michigan hasn’t won in Columbus since 2000.
Fields’ quote should be an indictment on the Michigan program under Jim Harbaugh’s leadership. Those in charge can point to Ohio State’s success in 2020 if anyone tries to defend Harbaugh with the fact of how unique this season has been given the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ohio State is a College Football Playoff favorite. Michigan is just looking to not be embarrassed once again this season. Beating the Wolverines is the baseline standard for the Buckeyes and it has recently become a routine victory on the path to the Big Ten Championship Game.
Harbaugh and Michigan need to figure out what the standard is for their program. Is it competing for championships, or just about making bowl games? If the former is true, changes need to be made soon.
