Texas football will not be playing Kansas football on Saturday afternoon anymore.

As expected, No. 20 Texas football had its game vs. Kansas football canceled due to COVID-19.

Texas paused its team activities after a few players and staffers tested positive for the coronavirus after their road victory last week over the Kansas State Wildcats. While the Texas Longhorns are the No. 20 team in the country, there is a chance they are done playing this season. As for the winless Kansas Jayhawks, their pitiful 2020 campaign is finally over, so congratulations.

Has Tom Herman coached his last game as the Texas football coach?

What is interesting here is the Big 12 opted to cancel the game on Dec. 12, as opposed to rescheduling it for Dec. 19, since neither the Longhorns or the Jayhawks will be playing in the conference title bout. It may be a home date for Kansas, but why would a winless team want to drag out its disaster of a season for one week longer? As for Texas, it is all about Tom Herman.

Texas is 6-3 on the season. Though the College Football Playoff Selection Committee thinks highly enough of them for some reason to have them in the latest top 25 rankings, the Longhorns do have three conference losses on the year already to the TCU Horned Frogs, the Oklahoma Sooners and the Iowa State Cyclones. An easy win over Kansas would have helped Herman keep his job.

Though Texas has no shot at making a New Year’s Six bowl, it will be fascinating to see if the Longhorns do play in a meaningless bowl game this year. If the university is done with Herman as its head coach, the team may opt out of playing another game this year. Ultimately, this all comes down to money for a buyout and hiring a new staff, as well as getting the right coach in there.

By not playing Kansas, this leaves the Herman era in Austin in serious doubt at this point.
