Darren Woodson’s take on Mike McCarthy’s first season might surprise Cowboys fans

Darren Woodson is giving Mike McCarthy a pass on his poor 2020 season.
Not much has gone right for the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, and most observers are pinning that on the fact that Mike McCarthy appears to be a significant downgrade from Jason Garrett. Former Cowboys defensive back Darren Woodson, however, is trying to give McCarthy a way to escape blame, as he thinks that trying to succeed with an entirely new coaching staff in a season that has been altered dramatically by COVID-19 is almost an impossible task.
In an interview with FanSided, Woodson tried to absolve McCarthy from taking a big chunk of the blame, as he claims that the Cowboys uneven performance on offense without Dak Prescott and horrid defensive play is due to the lack of continuity brought on by the COVID-affected offseason.
Darren Woodson thinks Mike McCarthy’s defense will get better with more practice
“McCarthy came in through COVID,” Woodson said. “There was no one-on-one, in your face, personal understanding of the defensive and offensive scheme. They did everything through Zoom. How do you build a team through Zoom?”
While that refrain does make some sense, especially considering McCarthy was a first-year head coach who is returning to the coaching ranks after a year away from the game, other teams with first-year head coaches, like Kevin Stefanski’s Cleveland Browns and Joe Judge’s New York Giants, are in the playoff picture, while Dallas is looking at a Top 10 pick in the 2021 draft.
Dallas has some franchise players, especially on the offensive side of the ball, but if McCarthy is beyond reproach given the unusual circumstances, who is to blame for this feckless roster? If McCarthy can’t get it done in 2021, Woodson might end up changing his tune.
