Injury-plagued free agent David Dahl has agreed to a deal with the Texas Rangers according to a report from ESPN on Friday.

David Dahl is heading to Texas.

The 26-year-old outfielder has agreed to a deal with the Texas Rangers in hopes of finding his 2019 All-Star form in the American League.

The deal between Dahl and the Rangers is for one year and valued at $3 million, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

David Dahl had major highs and lows with the Rockies

If this were 2019, when Dahl was fresh off an All-Star appearance and playing better than most in the majors, it would be a significantly bigger deal for the Rangers to pick him up.

However, there’s a reason the Rockies chose not to offer their outfielder a new contract at the conclusion of this season. Injuries have been a major roadblock for Dahl throughout his career. He had surgery on his right shoulder this September, suffered a season-ending ankle injury in August of 2019, sat out two months with a broken foot in 2018, couldn’t play in 2017 because of a rib cage injury and had his spleen removed in 2015, as Arnie Stapleton of the AP detailed when the Rockies decided to part ways.

That hellish run of injuries may have mattered less in the Rockies’ decision-making process if his performance in 2020 had been more impressive. Dahl batted .183 in just 99 plate appearances this year. He managed just 17 hits, nine RBI and zero home runs. His WAR in 2020 was -1.0.

Texas is betting on Dahl being more of his 2019 self than 2020 when he gets back for Spring Training. That year was by far his best in the majors as he hit .302 with 14 home runs and 61 RBI.

Whatever Dahl does in Texas, fans of the Detroit Tigers will be watching closely. There was a social media trend, #DahlToDetroit, calling for the Tigers to pick up the outfielder on the cheap. The player even acknowledged the campaign.

“Appreciate the love from the fans!” Dahl tweeted on Thursday. “They haven’t offered tho!”
