Sometimes the best hires are the ones under the radar. These coaches could be given their chance to succeed after the 2020 season.

Remember when Sean McVay was the “out of the blue” hire? A hotshot offensive coordinator who has some success with Kirk Cousins was now excepted to lead the Los Angeles Rams to victory, right?

Well, he’s 34-0 when leading at halftime and hasn’t had a losing record in all four years out west.

Sometimes owners and general managers overthink the hiring process of a head coach. Granted, while names like Eric Bieniemy and Robert Saleh are worthy of consideration, there’s no telling how successful they will be as the leader of the team.

There could be up to nine head coaching positions available this offseason. Who’s to say that one club doesn’t take a risk with a name out of left field? If so, this trio might be worth taking a good hard look at in the interview process.

Which under the radar coaches could shine as head coaches in 2021?

Just because someone isn’t running the offense or defense doesn’t mean they can’t succeed as a head coach. It’s why Dave Toub should be the other Kansas City Chiefs coach up for hiring this offseason.

The Chiefs have one of the league’s best units on kickoffs and kickoff returns. Currently, they rank second in kickoff returns (27.8) and have one of the more reliable kickers in Harrison Butker. To top that, Toub’s units defensively consistently pin opponents inside the 20 if not further.

When hiring a special teams coach, it’s about bringing in the right coordinators. After 19 years of coaching with a multitude of different styles, Toub could bring in a unique touch to a franchise that could set the NFL on fire.
