James Wiseman’s Golden State Warriors debut might take a while.

The Golden State Warriors were in quite the unusual situation, as they held the second pick in the 2020 NBA Draft despite being widely expected to secure a playoff spot in the 2020-21 postseason. While they solved their biggest need by grabbing Memphis center James Wiseman, his debut with the Warriors might not come for a while after both he and veteran forward Draymond Green tested positive for COVID-19 in the latest round of testing.

With Green and Wiseman both having tested positive, the Warriors are likely going to hold them both out of the preseason, putting their regular-season debuts potentially in jeopardy.

James Wiseman could give the Warriors a true game-changing center

The Warriors essentially drafted Wiseman out of high school, as he played just three games for Penny Hardway at Memphis. Still, a 7-1 center with his athletic ability, soft touch, and ferocious demeanor inside was too good for Golden State to pass up. Wiseman is expected to serve as the new starting center, with Green returning to the power forward position on a Warriors team that is looking to contend.

Wiseman has already pumped up Warriors fans after he was seen draining corner threes, a sign that he is expanding his game. His high school and college tape proves that he could give Golden State some muscle and height on the inside, but potentially becoming a spot-up shooter could give this Warriors offense a new dimension that it hasn’t been privy to in years past.

If Wiseman is everything that his athletic profile and physical stature say that he can be, Golden State might’ve just drafted a perennial All-Star. However, Warriors fans need to exercise some restraint, as they need to wait until he recovers before he makes his pro debut.
