The Houston Texans are on the verge of bungling their head coaching decision.

The Houston Texans might’ve finally made the only move expected of them when they parted ways with head coach Bill O’Brien, but they could put this franchise in an even deeper hole if they end up potentially hiring a coach that is even worse than O’Brien. As bad as it sounds, that could become a reality.

Adam Schefter is reporting that while the Texans are extremely interested in Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for their coaching vacancy, Houston will also consider Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer based on a strong recommendation.

Brian Schottenheimer isn’t qualified to be the head coach of the Texans

Schottenheimer, who got his start as a quarterbacks coach in San Diego under his father, legendary NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, has been an offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach since 2006. However, his results leave a lot to be desired.

While he went to two AFC Championship games with the New York jets on the backs of his league-best running games, he was ultimately booted for his inability to help make Mark Sanchez a viable starting quarterback. He oversaw some of the league’s worst offenses as OC of Jeff Fisher’s St. Louis Rams immediately after the Jets let him go. Despite having Sony Michel and Nick Chubb during his lone season as Georgia OC in 2015, the Bulldogs were just 85th in points scored.

Schottenheimer has been in charge of some of the best offenses in the league over the last three seasons, but that is due to Russell Wilson constantly bailing him out. The “Let Russ Cook” movement was directed squarely at Schottenheimer for running the ball too frequently.

Deshaun Watson deserves better than a franchise willing to hire someone as unqualified to become an NFL head coach as Schottenheimer.
