Kyrie Irving says Shams Charania tried to sneak into a Brooklyn Nets workout.

As one of the two most prominent NBA reporters in the game, Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium is accustomed to having premier access. He’s built up a network of reliable sources throughout the league, is well-known by players, PR staffers and league executives alike, and he’s worked incredibly hard to establish himself as a leading authority on all things NBA.

However, even the most elite sportswriters and news-breakers aren’t given unfettered access to behind-the-scenes content, and apparently the Brooklyn Nets had to keep Charania in check recently.

According to Kyrie Irving, who recently broke his silence with the media, Charania tried to sneak into the Nets’ workouts in Los Angeles.

We’ve made jokes for years about how Charania and ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski must be hiding in broom closets or up in the air ventilator shafts somewhere to get some of the crazy scoops they unearth from time to time.

But while this sort of thing shouldn’t be surprising, and it’s still unknown what Charania was hoping to find — Practice footage? Exclusive, rushed interviews without anyone from the PR team noticing? — it is pretty funny to picture one of the media’s most prominent reporters trying to sneak into a Nets workout like Vincent Adultman wearing a hat and a trench coat. Maybe the glasses and fake mustache weren’t convincing enough?
