Heisman forecast for top 6 contenders entering championship weekend
Kyle Trask, Florida
The SEC title game could have been a glorious duel for the award, but Trask took some of the wind out of that sail. His two-interception night against LSU all but removed the Gators from the College Football Playoff conversation and put a major dent in Trask’s candidacy as he’s at +400 heading to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but he still arguably has a better shot at the Heisman than the Gators do of playing for a national title.
He remains the nation’s leader with 3,717 yards and has thrown 10 more touchdown passes than anyone else with 30. Alabama couldn’t seem more daunting, ranking 11th in scoring defense (16.8 points per game) and 16th in pass efficiency (115.03) with 11 picks (third in the SEC) and if Trask can put up monster numbers against that defense, he can make voters forget some of what happened against LSU.
Heisman Forecast: If anyone other than Jones is going to end up hoisting the trophy, Trask seems the most logical choice. But this goes into how much the Gators’ second loss of the season hurts. We’ve seen one winner in the CFP era (Louisville’s Lamar Jackson in 2016) whose team didn’t make the final four, and Trask would need to be great while also completely outshining Jones, who hasn’t had a bad game. That seems a difficult formula to give the Gators their first trophy in 13 years.
