Early National Signing Day Loser No. 1: Auburn Tigers

Considering that the Auburn Tigers gave head coach Gus Malzahn the ax just before Wednesday and the culmination of the early signing period, it shouldn’t be all that shocking that the program didn’t make a ton of splashes. But even then, it’s hard not to look and see Auburn with only the No. 46-ranked recruiting class in the country and not be disappointed.

In truth, Auburn’s shortcomings multiplied. They only have 12 commits in the class right now, which is obviously a sign of the head coaching change. But even then, they only have four 4-star prospects and no 5-star prospects in that group. It’s obvious that the incoming group of talent just isn’t at the same level as other top SEC programs.

To that same point, one of the best prospects of Auburn’s 2021 recruiting class was offensive guard Jaedon Roberts. But on the early National Signing Day, the Tigers watched rival Alabama flip the 4-star offensive lineman, only making their situation worse.

If you’re trying to be optimistic, the hope is that Auburn can get a new head coach — be it Kevin Steele, Hugh Freeze or otherwise — in the building soon for a heavy push over the next couple of months. But as it stands, this looks to be a disheartening recruiting class for the Tigers.
