The Chiefs have two perfect coaches to fix the Chargers
While the focus is on one head coaching option, the Kansas City Chiefs have two that could fix many teams, including the Los Angeles Chargers.
Fans shouldn’t be talking about the Los Angeles Chargers in a positive light. Yes, the team picked up a 30-27 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders, but it came in overtime on a late surge from Justin Herbert at the goal line.
Prior to his final drive, Herbert threw one pass in the fourth. Just one.
The Raiders saw Derek Carr leave on the second drive with a groin injury. Defensive coordinator Paul Guenther was fired on Sunday and the team was on a short week. Offensive coordinator Greg Olsen was out after being told he was in contact with COVID-19 related symptoms.
Yet it took a deep throw and dumb luck from Herbert to guarantee the victory when Los Angeles should have been home a half-hour before. It’s why Anthony Lynn should be feeling the heat since his seat is beyond scorching.
If the Chargers start fresh, they have the roster to entice any name on the open market. However, if you want to win your division, sometimes you have to play dirty.
In that case, both Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and Special teams coordinator Dave Toub should be in the running.
Could both coaches work out west?
The hottest name on the market entering the 2020 offseason, Bieniemy has been in-waiting for a head coaching opportunity since 2018. In two years, his knowledge under Andy Reid has transformed Patrick Mahomes into an MVP quarterback and the Chiefs offense into an unstoppable juggernaut.
The Chiefs once again are powering through the AFC thanks to strong offensive play. Behind Bieniemy’s system, Mahomes leads the NFL in passing while both Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce have surpassed 1,000 yards on the season.
Should Bieniemy go elsewhere, Toub
is a name that’s floated around
the head coaching chatter for over the past five seasons. With the rebound on special teams and the development of talents such as Hill and Mecole Hardman, it’s hard to ignore his mind could easily transition to calling the shots.
The Chargers entered Sunday with the worst special teams DVOA in the league. Things only got worse with two missed kicks from Michael Badgley. Throw in near two decades of coaching experience from Toub and his Rolodex of names he could add to the coaching staff makes him intriguing.
The Chargers need a change in 2020. While Herbert would love to work with Bieniemy, a young OC could keep him on pace. Toub might be a name of out left field, but wasn’t Sean McVay as well?
Keep an eye on both to leave one AFC West team and join another come this offseason.
