Canelo Alvarez and Callum Smith meet in a super middleweight clash to close out 2020. Here’s everything you need to know to watch and celebrate.

Super middleweights Canelo Alvarez and Callum Smith meet on Saturday, Dec. 19, in one of the year’s biggest boxing bouts. The pandemic diminished the luster around sporting events, but there is a limited live audience in attendance, and the fight is being streamed worldwide.

Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KOs) is arguably the most popular active fighter in all of boxing. He’s decided to make the super middleweight division his home, and WBA champion Smith holds a title that Alvarez wants. The vacant WBC title is also on the line.

Smith (27-0, 19 KOs) is an undefeated champion out of the U.K. and poses a problem for Alvarez. There’s no doubt that Alvarez has the deeper résumé, but Smith enjoys a massive height and reach advantage, but Alvarez is used to being the smaller man in the division.

Both men are 30 years old, so age isn’t a factor, but Alvarez has 15 years in professional boxing logged compared to Smith’s eight. Smith has wins over John Ryder and George Groves, which are good, but they pale compared to Alaverz’s wins over Gennadiy Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev, Miguel Cotto, and Shane Mosley.

They are fighting at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, in front of a restricted live audience, but here’s how to watch from home.

How to watch

In the U.S., DAZN has exclusive streaming rights for the fight. If you have a DAZN subscription, you’re set. All you need is the DAZN app.

If you’re not a DAZN subscriber, you can order the fight via pay-per-view through many cable providers for $69.99. If you go the pay-per-view route, you also get four months of access to DAZN.

A DAZN subscription costs $19.99 per month or $99.99 for a yearly subscription plan.

Fight Date and time

As stated earlier, Alvarez vs. Smith takes place on Saturday, Dec. 19. DAZN begins its fight card coverage at 8 p.m. ET and estimates that the Alvarez vs. Smith ring walks will begin at 11 p.m ET.

Celebration tips (Only if you’re 21 years old or over)

Cognac company Hennessy sponsors Alvarez. They’ve been active in the marketing of Alvarez and the fight and crafted a drink for the contest. The main ingredient is Hennessy V.S.O.P. Privilege, which this writer received courtesy of Hennessy.

The drink is called “The V.S.O.P. Sour.” According to Hennessy, ingredients include 1.5 oz of Hennessy V.S.O.P. Privilege, 0.5 oz of lime juice, 0.5 oz of lemon juice, 1 oz simple syrup, and a lemon twist garnish.

Per Hennessy’s instructions, shake all liquids in a shaker with ice and strain into a glass when chilled and garnish.

Reminder, you have to be 21 years or older to consume alcohol. Drink responsibly and NEVER drink and drive.

Enjoy fight night!
