Ohio State football star quarterback Justin Fields was bad vs. Northwestern and this injury could explain part of his struggles vs. the Wildcats.

Justin Fields played one of the worst games of his Ohio State football career in the Big Ten Championship Game vs. Northwestern but the Buckeyes still got the win. Running back Trey Sermon was largely responsible for the win after rushing for an Ohio State single-game record 331 yards and helped overcome the struggles by Fields.

Northwestern has one of the best defenses in the country which can help explain part of the reason for Fields’ struggles, but another reason he struggled was revealed after the game when Fields admitted he suffered an injury.

Justin Fields avoided a serious injury vs. Northwestern

Fields wasn’t sure if he sprained his thumb, but he’ll get an x-ray to determine the extent of the injury, he told FOX Sports’, Jenny Taft. Credit Fields for gutting it out and finishing the game and helping the Buckeyes add another Big Ten title to the trophy case.

Fields seemed concerned but not overly concerned about the injury and with Ohio State likely set to meet Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, Fields has some time to recover and get back to 100 percent. Although, not as much time as there normally is between championship weekend and the start of the playoff.

That said, this injury doesn’t figure to sideline Fields from the game and, if anything, considering he was able to finish the game.

So take a deep breath and relax knowing Ohio State has made it through a season that wasn’t supposed to even happen to be in a place where they are now two wins away from a national championship.
