Carson Wentz is done with Eagles after seeing Jalen Hurts ball out
By John Buhler
Carson Wentz has lost his job to Jalen Hurts as the Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback.
With no intention to serve as a backup under any circumstance, Carson Wentz is poised to break up with the Philadelphia Eagles, mostly because second-round rookie Jalen Hurts is already a better quarterback than him.
Hurts had universal appeal in college football, as he was beloved by both the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Oklahoma Sooners, as well as anybody who followed the sport. Obviously, the key word is had, as he does not have universal appeal in the NFL. This is because Hurts has come in and in two weeks has stolen the Eagles’ starting quarterback job away from the former No. 2 pick.

Carson Wentz’s fall from grace is one of the strangest things we saw in 2020
Wentz began his fifth year out of North Dakota State as the unquestioned Philadelphia starter. He played at an MVP level in his second season before tearing his ACL. His former backup Nick Foles took over for him, caught fire once the weather change and he won Super Bowl LII MVP faster than you can say “Philly, Philly.”
It is Foles and head coach Doug Pederson who have a statue outside of Lincoln Financial Field, not Wentz. His time in Philadelphia is over. What we have to wonder is how all of this transpired. How does an undisputed top-10 quarterback in the league seemingly fall of the cliff so precipitously? What has led to him being more likely to play elsewhere in 2021 than in Philadelphia?
Hurts came in for a benched Wentz in Week 13’s road loss to the Green Bay Packers, providing an offensive spark Wentz never could all year long. In his first career start, Hurts helped guide the Eagles to a huge upset victory over the New Orleans Saints. Now, the Eagles are going toe-to-toe with another middle-of-the-pack team in the Arizona Cardinals. This is totally Hurts’ team now.
Philadelphia will try to trade Wentz this offseason, but his contract is now a total albatross and a potential trade partner has all the leverage. One likely landing spot for him would be the Indianapolis Colts. Their starter Philip Rivers is expected to retire after this season. Indianapolis’ head coach Frank Reich was Wentz’s offensive coordinator during his best season back in 2017.
Ultimately, Wentz never proved he could elevate the talent around him offensively. When he had a good offensive line in front of him, he could spread the ball all over the gridiron. But when he has to attempt to carry the offense, he cannot do it. Hurts is doing a better job under center for the Eagles and we cannot deny it any more. Wentz is as good as gone and he will be on another team.
Wentz will serve as a warning to not pay big money to a mostly unproven starting quarterback.
