Justin Jefferson set a new Vikings rookie record Sunday afternoon against the Bears.

Justin Jefferson has been a huge addition for the Minnesota Vikings offense in 2020. The rookie is already well over 1,000 yards on the year is the team’s leading receiver ahead of Adam Thielen.

His success meant he was destined to break some rookie records and one fell Sunday as the Vikings take on the Chicago Bears. Jefferson now holds the franchise mark for most receptions by a rookie receiver, surpassing Randy Moss’ mark set way back in 1998.

Jefferson setting a new standard

Remember, Jefferson has set this record in Week 15. Continuing to play at his current pace over the final two weeks of the season may turn this record into one that will be tough to ever beat.

The attention now turns to whether Jefferson can reach Moss’ yardage total of 1,313 from that 1998 season. He entered Sunday with 1,078 and had 97 yards midway through the fourth quarter Sunday. So there is no reason why he can’t set a new record as long as Kirk Cousins keeps looking his way.

One record Jefferson won’t be breaking is Moss’ total of 17 touchdowns as a rookie. That is an insane total for any receiver, let alone a rookie. Jefferson entered play Sunday with seven on the season.

The Philadelphia Eagles held the No. 21 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and selected receiver Jalen Reagor. The Vikings picked at No. 22 and took Jefferson and while it is still early, there are no complaints in Minnesota about how it all played out.
