Derek Watt helped off field after suffering scary injury on special teams
By John Buhler
Derek Watt had to be helped off the field after this scary moment at Paul Brown Stadium.
On a Pittsburgh Steelers punt, fullback Derek Watt went in to make the tackle on Cincinnati Bengals return man Alex Erickson and suffered an apparent head injury.
Watt’s head collided with Erickson’s knee on the made tackle. While Erickson was not able to advance the ball, Watt lied on the Paul Brown Stadium turf completely motionless. We know the Bengals and Steelers have a bitter rivalry that often resorts to on-field violence, but this was just a football play and one that Watt needed assistance to make it to the Steelers sideline.
Pittsburgh needs to win this game to stay alive for the No. 1 seed
Though the Bengals are only 2-10-1 on the season, there is no wiggle room for the Steelers if they want to have home-field advantage in the AFC this season. After winning their first 11 games of the season, Pittsburgh has dropped its last two to fall to 11-2 on the year. With the Kansas City Chiefs improving to 13-1 on the year after their Week 15 victory, Pittsburgh is running out of time.
While it is unlikely if Watt will return to this game, his teammates will need to step up in his absence to avoid embarrassment on the road vs. the Bengals. This is the easiest game left on the Steelers’ schedule, as they have dates with the Indianapolis Colts and the division rival Cleveland Browns before knowing what seed they will have in the upcoming AFC playoffs.
Here is to Watt coming out of this scary moment okay.
