Cam’Ron Fletcher will spend some time away from Kentucky.

John Calipari and Kentucky have won just one of their first six games, which is completely uncharted territory for this batch of elite recruits. The frustration got to freshman Cam’Ron Fletcher, who was seen exploding in anger on the bench during a loss against North Carolina. Calipari took a hard stance against him, forcing him to distance himself from the program.

Calipari disciplined Fletcher by telling him to “step away” from the team for the foreseeable future. As bad as this looks, Calipari followed that statement up with a tweet that makes it sound like this team is committed to helping Fletcher out.

Cam’Ron Fletcher has had to watch Calipari’s Wildcats get bulldozes in 2020

Kentucky’s 1-5 start, the worst for this program in decades, hasn’t been Fletcher’s fault, as he has barely been on the floor in his first season in Lexington. Fletcher hasn’t scored in four games and is averaging just 2.2 points per contest on the young season. He played just two minutes in their loss to the Tar Heels.

Fletcher himself put out a tweet in which he took responsibility for his actions, reaffirming his desire to get himself back in Calipari’s good graces and turn this season around. Calipari and the coaching staff clearly believe in his talent and want to see him flourish as a Wildcat. But insubordination and emotional outbursts like what Calipari saw in that last game clearly crossed the line, and Fletcher is paying the price.

Maybe giving Fletcher some time off will be what both gets Fletcher out of his funk and ends up sparking the Wildcats. Calipari needs to do something, or the Wildcats might have a difficult time competing when SEC conference play rolls around.
