Gang Green does regrettable things all the time anyway

There are two starting quarterbacks still in their early-to-mid-20s that are worth orchestrating a trade for. Yes, the Steelers could target Carson Wentz from the Philadelphia Eagles, but he is more likely to be reunited with this former offensive coordinator Frank Reich on the Indianapolis Colts if he is dealt. The other guy is the one the Steelers need to give up the farm for: Sam Darnold.

2020 is Darnold’s third NFL season out of USC. Other than Josh Rosen, he has been the worst first-round quarterback taken in his draft class. The New York Jets are utterly atrocious and are so bad they could not even tank for Lawrence correctly. So the Jets will continue to be the Jets and draft either Fields out of Ohio State at No. 2 or reach for Wilson out of BYU with the same pick.

The Jets may not offer Darnold the fifth-year option this offseason. That would mean the Steelers would have to give up even less for the former Pac-12 star because he would be on the final year of his rookie deal in 2021. Like Winston, Darnold has a little bit of the Roethlisberger prototype as an NFL passer. He is a student of the game and just needs to play in a functional environment.

Next. Clay Matthews pays tribute to Kevin Greene. dark

This is a guy who will be able to hold his own in AFC North play with the likes of 2018 draft classmates Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson, as well as this past year’s first-round pick in Joe Burrow. Give it a little bit of time, Steelers Nation, but Darnold will get you to an AFC Championship game before his 30th birthday. He will make the Jets regret trading him this spring.

Who should replace Roethlisberger as the Steelers’ starting quarterback in the 2021 season?
