The Kansas City Chiefs have signed former New York Jets running back Elijah McGuire following the injury to rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Kansas City Chiefs fans probably had their hearts drop on Sunday when Clyde Edwards-Helaire went down with a serious-looking injury in the win over the New Orleans Saints. The rookie has since been diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain and a strained hip, ending his 2020 regular season.

The hope is that the speedster can make his way back to the field for the postseason. However, it’s very much up in the air when he’ll be able to return. Because of this, the Chiefs have decided to bring another running back into town, as it was announced on Tuesday morning they’ve signed Elijah McGuire to the practice squad.

The Chiefs have brought in Elijah McGuire in a move to bolster running back depth

With Edwards-Helaire out for at least the new two games, Le’Veon Bell will take over as the starting running back. Thus far this season, Bell has carried the ball 75 times for 298 yards and two scores. He’s also averaging four yards per carry.

As for McGuire, he’s no stranger to Kansas City, as he spent some time on the team’s practice squad last season as well. A former 2017 sixth-round pick of the New York Jets, he appeared in 24 games for the team. In 2017, McGuire rushed for 315 yards and a touchdown. The following year, he totaled 276 yards and three scores.

For now, he’ll head to the Chiefs’ practice squad and wait to see if he’ll be needed to suit up on Sundays. Behind Bell, the Chiefs also have running backs Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson active on the 53-man roster.
