Scouting Report. 1. player. 55. Pick Analysis. Offensive Coordinator. Pittsburgh Steelers. Randy Fichtner

As bad as Fichtner’s offense has been over the last few weeks, his thinking isn’t so outlandish. He has an aging quarterback in Big Ben that is losing arm strength, and he has four wide receivers that can make plays with the ball, so why not emphasize the quick game? However, in practice, Fichtner’s plan has completely ruined their flow on offense. Very rarely do the Steelers ever go beyond 10 yards down the field, and their offense of drags, bubble screens, and stick routes has led opposing defenses stuffing the box, making both running and throwing short more difficult.

Fichtner might be handicapped by Roethlisberger, but some of his playcalling choices have been truly baffling. No one is saying that the Steelers need to turn into Air Coryell, but there has to be some spice in the passing game. Instead, Fichtner has almost completely abandoned the run, as Big Ben has more attempts than any quarterback in the league, and most of his attempts are quick drag routes that don’t threaten the defense vertically or horizontally. Pittsburgh needs ro wipe the slate clean and bring in someone who will actually get creative with his play calls and designs.
