Former Texas A&M star quarterback Johnny Manziel agrees to join new startup league Fan Controlled Football after a one-year absence from the game

Johnny Manziel, the former Texas A&M star quarterback and 2012 Heisman Trophy recipient, has agreed to join the new startup football league, Fan Controlled Football in 2021.

Manziel, whose NFL career fizzled to an end after a two-year stint with the Cleveland Browns, will return to the gridiron for the first time since April 2019 where he was a member of the Memphis Express from the folded Alliance of American Football league. He also had a short stint in the Canadian Football League.

“Life gives you opportunities sometimes to do something that you would still like to do if it was in a different capacity,” Manziel said, via ESPN. “This has a lot of potential to just be a good time and still be football-centric. They’re going to let the people [who] join this league be who they are and have fun with it and be a little bit more free than what football is sometimes. That’s definitely what appealed to me. They don’t want me to change who I am or anything else. They want to come out, put a good product out and be fun with it.”

The Fan Controlled Football league will commence in February with a six-week schedule that will include 7-on-7 contests on a 50-by-35 yard field where the fans are in total control of the rosters, play calling.

Games will be live-streamed on Twitch from a league-leased facility in Atlanta. The games will last about an hour so this is a fast-paced type of game.

Due to Manziel’s popularity via social media and other digital platforms, the league seems to be the perfect fit for the former star quarterback to reinvigorate his football career and reputation.
