1. Didi Gregorius

Gregorius is the biggest and most obvious former Yankee that could return to the team this season. Fans in New York don’t want to consider the possibility of D.J. LeMahieu leaving in free agency, but if he does it could pave the way for Didi to make a sensational return.

If LeMahieu does leave the Yankees will likely move Gleyber Torres to second base. HIs glove plays better there than at the shortstop position. Clearly, that would put the team in the market for a new starting shortstop.

A trade for a big talent like Franciso Lindor or Trevor Storey could be an avenue the Yankees pursue to fill that vacancy but a reunion with Gregorius could be a much more cost-effective solution. He’s available in free agency and could likely be had on a short-term deal at under $10 million per season.

The fact that Gregorius could help balance Boone’s lineup as a left-handed bat adds to his potential value for the Yankees. He isn’t a good contact hitter, but he still has pop that can play particularly well with the short porch at Yankee Stadium. He may be done tweeting emojis after Yankee wins, but he could help this team on the field if LeMahieu leaves this offseason.
