5 head coaching candidates for Jaguars after firing Doug Marrone
Smith has climbed the ladder in Tennessee, from quality control in 2011 and ’12 to tight ends coach to now in his second as Titans’ offensive coordinator.
The work he has done to create a high-scoring and balanced offense around Derrick Henry, while coaxing the best from quarterback Ryan Tannehill since he stepped in for Marcus Mariota last season, has gotten Smith attention in head coaching rumors.
The Jaguars have some interesting skill position pieces (James Robinson, D.J. Chark, Laviska Shenault, Keelan Cole, Collin Robinson). Drafting Lawrence would ideally solidify the quarterback position, and Smith would get someone he can work with from the start after reshaping Tannehill.
Smith should get multiple head coaching interviews, with the possibility the Titans make noise in the playoffs again after last year’s shocking run to the AFC title game to fortify his candidacy. The Jaguars could wait for that possible playoff run to end before fully fleshing out their coaching search, though there’s fine line between waiting for the right guy and possibly waiting too long.
