3 Green Bay Packers who likely won’t be brought back in 2021
The Packers telegraphed their decision to let Jones go in free agency last spring when they spent a second-round pick on A.J. Dillon. Their decision to let their starting running back go has nothing to do with his productivity. It’s purely a matter of supply and demand within the modern NFL.
Simply put, Green Bay believes they can find a player to give them almost all of Jones’ production at a fraction of his potential price tag. Someone is going to give him a massive raise over the nearly $2.25 million salary he earned in 2020. The Packers aren’t the front office to hand that kind of cash to the running back position.
Instead, look for Jones to hit the open market and obtain a lucrative contract from a competitor. Paying a running back big money is fraught with danger, but Jones has the big-play ability modern offensive coaches crave. It will be interesting to see what he can do away from the comfort of playing behind Rodgers on a weekly basis.
Green Bay will be content to soldier on with the aforementioned Dillon as their starter in 2021. The impending free agency of fellow running back Jamaal Williams does complicate things slightly for the team’s front office. Expect the Packers to acquire another quality running back on the cheap in free agency. Green Bay fans should enjoy Jones’ exploits during this season’s playoffs. He’ll likely be playing elsewhere come 2021.
